(1) India successfully tests Agni-Prime missile with a range of 2,000 km
from Dr. Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. The missile, a new variant of the Agni series, is capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads and has a high accuracy and mobility. The test was conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of the user trials by the Indian Army. The missile is expected to enhance India’s strategic deterrence capability and strengthen its national security.
(2) PM Modi launches e-RUPI, a cashless and contactless digital payment platform
that will enable users to make payments without a card, digital wallet or mobile app. The platform, developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and National Health Authority, will act as an e-voucher that can be sent to the beneficiary’s mobile phone as a QR code or SMS string. The platform will be used for delivering services under schemes such as Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, fertiliser subsidies, etc.
(3) India’s GDP grows by 20.1% in Q1 of FY 2023-24
as per the provisional estimates released by the National Statistical Office (NSO). The growth reflects the recovery from the contraction of 24.4% in Q1 of FY 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The sectors that registered positive growth in Q1 include manufacturing, construction, electricity, gas, water supply & other utility services, trade, hotels, transport, communication & services related to broadcasting, financial, real estate & professional services and public administration, defence & other services.
(4) India ranks 10th in Global Cybersecurity Index 2020
released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialised agency of the United Nations. The index measures the commitment of 194 countries to cybersecurity based on five pillars: legal measures, technical measures, organisational measures, capacity development and cooperation. India scored 97.5 out of 100 points and improved its rank from 47th in 2018. The top three countries in the index are the United States, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia.

(5) India wins four medals at Tokyo Olympics 2020
which concluded on August 8, 2020. India’s medal tally includes one gold, two silver and one bronze. The gold medal was won by Neeraj Chopra in men’s javelin throw, making him the first Indian to win an Olympic gold in athletics. The silver medals were won by Mirabai Chanu in women’s 49 kg weightlifting and Ravi Kumar Dahiya in men’s freestyle 57 kg wrestling. The bronze medal was won by PV Sindhu in women’s singles badminton, making her the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals.

(6) India assumes presidency of UN Security Council for August 2020
the third time during its 2020-22 tenure as a non-permanent member of the council. India’s agenda for the month includes three signature events on maritime security, peacekeeping and counter-terrorism. India will also focus on issues such as Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Somalia, Mali and West Africa. India’s permanent representative to the UN, TS Tirumurti, will be the president of the council for August.

(7) India and Russia hold 12th round of talks on military and technical cooperation
in Moscow on July 30-31, 2020. The talks were co-chaired by Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar and Deputy Defence Minister of Russia Alexander Fomin. The two sides discussed a range of issues related to defence cooperation, including joint development and production of military equipment, technology transfer and after-sales support. They also reviewed the progress of ongoing projects such as S-400 air defence systems, AK-203 rifles and Ka-226T helicopters.

(8) India and Israel sign three agreements to boost cooperation in health sector
during the visit of Israeli Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz to India from July 28 to August 1, 2020. The agreements include a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on health cooperation, an MoU on cooperation in telemedicine and digital health and an MoU on cooperation in medical education and research. The two sides also discussed ways to enhance collaboration in areas such as COVID-19 management, vaccine development and delivery, medical innovation and start-ups.

(9) India and Uzbekistan hold first meeting of National Coordination Committee
to monitor the implementation of mutually agreed projects between the two countries. The meeting was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov in New Delhi on July 30, 2020. The two sides reviewed the progress of various projects in sectors such as connectivity, energy, IT, education, health, agriculture and capacity building. They also agreed to expedite the completion of the projects and explore new areas of cooperation.

(10) India and Maldives sign $500 million pact for Greater Male Connectivity Project
the largest infrastructure project in the Maldives. The pact was signed by Exim Bank of India and Ministry of Finance of Maldives in Male on July 29, 2020. The project involves the construction of a 6.7 km long bridge and causeway network that will connect the islands of Male, Villingili, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi. The project will boost connectivity, trade, tourism and employment in the Maldives. The project is expected to be completed by 2023.
