Virat Kohli celebrated his 500th international match in style by smashing a brilliant century against West Indies at Port of Spain on Friday. The Indian skipper not only led his team to a commanding position, but also broke several records in the process.
– Kohli reached his 29th Test hundred in the second session of the first day, overtaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 28 centuries as captain. He also became the second-fastest to reach 29 Test hundreds, behind only Sir Don Bradman.
– This was not the first time Kohli surpassed Tendulkar’s feats. He had earlier broken the Master Blaster’s record of most runs in a calendar year as captain, most centuries in a calendar year as captain, and most ODI centuries as captain.
– Kohli also holds the record of scoring double hundreds in four consecutive Test series, a feat he achieved against West Indies, England, New Zealand and Bangladesh between 2016 and 2017. He broke Brian Lara’s record of three consecutive series with double hundreds, which he had set between 2003 and 2004.
– Kohli is also the fastest to reach 12,000 runs in ODIs, a milestone he achieved in December 2020 against Australia. He took only 242 innings to reach the mark, beating AB de Villiers’ record of 300 innings. He also has the highest career batting average among batsmen with more than 10,000 ODI runs, with an astonishing 57.32.
– Kohli has a special affinity for Australia, as he has scored the most hundreds against them in ODIs. He has 10 centuries against the Aussies, more than any other batsman in history. He also has the most ODI runs against Australia, with 2,020 runs at an average of 63.12.
– Kohli is undoubtedly one of the greatest batsmen of all time, and his records speak for themselves. He has shown remarkable consistency, hunger and passion across formats, and has led India to many memorable victories. His 500th match was another testament to his greatness, and he is not done yet..
